A message about “that Slate thing”.
My co-writer, Grady Hendrix, and I recently contributed an article to Slate about our experiences so far as writers new to the world of YA literature.
We spend five to six hours a day in the chair alone writing and rewriting these books. We joke to make ourselves feel better, and I’m afraid our irony did not translate.
I was taken completely by surprise at the backlash. I didn’t mean to insult the industry that I’ve grown to love, and I’d like to apologize for the tone of the article. We intended for the piece to be a humorous recounting of our experience. I love my characters and I love my books; they are often all I have and trust throughout the long day. I was unfaithful to them. They deserve better.
We’re working hard on the next installment of the series and hope our fans will hang on for the next book, out in April 2012…

Another shot that could have been the GIRLS IN TRUCKS cover.
People often comment on how gorgeous the cover of Girls in Trucks is. I had absolutely nothing to do with it, but I couldn’t agree more. It was shot by Cig Harvey, who also does those funky Kate Spade ads.
Just for fun, here are some out takes from the shoot. If you want to read more about how the cover was created, *pick up the paperback*, which includes the details of the shot and other fun extras. (On sale April 7th.)
i taught daisy to shake hands today. this took about 2 hours. altho her new trick isn’t really a hand shake, it’s more of a paw tap. which she sort of did before. still, it’s really cute and it was a lot more fun than writing chapter 7.
look: i have a brother.
old pictures are fun to stare at when you should be working!
now we are both bigger. i still read books and wear bright colors. he no longer plays tee ball.
